CHAPTER 12

“If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” Milton Berle

Friday, 25 September 2020, 20.45, Hwy 60, Osage County, OK

“Tomorrow’s going to be another long day,” Ice groaned. The time away from Van had certainly affected his usual can-do attitude.

“Yes, but the more we can secure now, the fewer runs we’ll have to make in the future,” Mac responded.

“Do not say that! Every time I tell everyone that we were making a last run, someone finds another store.” Ice shook his head. “Don’t misunderstand me, I know we need to do this, but I’ll be happy once we’re all settled in and can relax for a while.”

In a repeat of the previous night, Hammer pulled out his camping stove and made quick work of preparing a meal for the two of them. This time, though, Mac noticed several others following suit, and she snickered.

“You’re a trendsetter, Ham,” Mac teased.

Hammer grunted, looking around. “Good, at least we don’t have to share.”

Lox joined them, sitting next to Mac with an empty bowl. Hammer dropped his head, knowing that he would be sharing with at least one other person. Having thought that, he realized that Lox was Mac’s person, so he couldn’t begrudge her some of the food he was making.

Seeing Salty and LJ heading their way, his shoulders dropped. Pulling out a second pot, he prepared a second meal, knowing it was useless to fight the inevitable.

“I’ll get it ready, but you’re cooking.”

“Fair enough.” Salty laughed.

After dinner and a quick briefing, the group scattered to find their racks, understanding that they had another long day on the road ahead of them.

Ice rousted people from their beds before the sun had even risen the following morning. With a lot of loud grumbling, they packed up and hit the road. The Black Hawk crew returned to the Superstore and checked in with the recruits. After the recruits radioed the all-clear, Mac returned to follow the convoy.

They’d been traveling for two hours when they reached Bartlesville. Mac did a low flyover at the airport, and seeing that there was no chance of finding fuel, she returned the convoy. As they turned south on Hwy 75, they saw yet another Superstore.

“Spider, we can check this one out when we come back,” Ice announced over the radio before Spider could give voice to his request.

“Roger. My concern is that this one is too close to that town that we had a run-in with several weeks ago. They may have already been here.”

“Agreed. We’ll focus on the other store. If we have time and space in the trailers, we can revisit whether to stop here tomorrow.”

“Roger that.”

“Mac, could you take a quick look down Hwy 60 east, closer to Nowata. Stay out of shooting range, just in case they're inclined to try and engage you. See if you can get a sense of what is happening there.”

“Copy wilco.”

“The town's not far from here,” Hammer told them. He briefed them about their run-in with the townsfolk shortly after the storms.
